Stroke

A stroke (also called a “brain attack”) is a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain, usually caused by blood clots. A stroke can cause the following problems: impaired vision, paralysis or muscle weakness, speech difficulties or memory loss.

Main types of stroke

  1. An ischemic stroke is caused by a blood clot blocking the flow of blood in part of the brain. 80% of strokes are ischemic.
    • A transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke is a sudden yet temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain resulting in stroke symptoms that last for several minutes. 36% of TIA sufferers will eventually have a stroke.
  2. A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding from a burst blood vessel in the brain or on the surface of the brain.
What happens when you are having a stroke

It's never too late to start reducing the risk of stroke, even for those who have been diagnosed with a stroke-related condition. If you have had a stroke, it's possible to decrease the risk of having another stroke. And, if you have a history of stroke, make sure you know what kind of stroke you had, as different treatments may be required. Consult your doctor for the most appropriate therapy for you.
